Felix and Friends: coming soon to a venue near you

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Anyone expecting liberal rants won’t be so fortunate today. Its time to talk about Felix.

I lost my Fender Stratocaster who I called Snowflake to a nasty drug problem. He OD’d and his pickups gave out. No that was a little joke. Funny huh? I was the one who had the problem and I’m the one who sold him along with all my gear including recording equipment. All I have now is a few slides, a tuner, string winders, and instrument cables in a box next to my bed.

But soon I will be getting a new guitar. Its either going to be some brand of acoustic or an Epiphone Dot Studio. I know its cheaper than the standard Dot but I’m not buying it based on price. If theres anything I’ve learned in almost a decade of playing and shopping for guitars its this: play it first, then look at the price. Of course I won’t be buying a Fender Strat 1950’s American Made reissue for at least a thousand dollars but I’m also not going to get a Squier Bullet because its only ninety nine bucks. I chose the Dot because I loved the sound. I played it through an amp similar to the one I had (a Roland Jazz-Chorus 120) and I fell in love. The standard Dot has two extra tone controls but I don’t need them because of how I play. I sat in Guitar Center and went through most of the songs I wrote and found that the Dot Studio gave me all the tone I needed.

After I get my guitar I will be practicing old songs and writing new ones. I’ll definitely be stopping by open mic nights pretty often. Then from there its all about networking and seeing if someone wants to put me on a bill with them. I’ll have to be a little more social then I was back when I used to play shows. I was usually setting up my own shows, renting out places. I usually wasn’t asked to open for anyone. I had to create my own oportunites. But now I’m older, a better player, and I lost the shitty drummer I had.

So yeah, I just wanted to write to inform anyone who cares or doesn’t that I should be performing live within three to five months. Maybe a practice show at an open mic night before then too.
