Cults: When Conspiracy Theories Marry Religion

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

I used to be a big believer in conspiracy theories. I believed that the new world order was run by the illuminati and that all the governments in the world were in on a plan for world domiation, enslaving humanity with the help of the UN. Yeah, it went something like that. It was ridiculous.

Recently I met a woman who opened my eyes to how ridiculous these ideas are. She’s in her mid forties, unemployed, and lives in the ghetto part of Lockport Illinois surrounded by drug dealers and gangs. Her husband works for a Sonic Drive-In where he cleans the parking lot each morning. They live there along with their two kids, three guys (aged between 18 and 20), and are soon going to be adding an additional roommate to the collection. They pay no mortgage because they claim the bank made a mistake on some paperwork and they “don’t want to be tied to anything illegal”. I wonder if they know they will get kicked out regardless. The woman, whose name I will not mention, claims to be an ordained minister of Messianic Judaism but only preaches in her home and never let’s anyone know where or how she was ordained. She says she never went to school and that Yaweh opened her eyes to understand and find hidden messages in the bible.

Enough background information. Let’s get to the cult. This woman gets members by being the cool older lady who smokes pot with the kids. She gets them high and then constantly preaches how the bible and the new world order conspiracy go together. I won’t bore you with the actual conspiracies. You can look then up online.

These ideas are very tempting. Everyone would love to believe that they are privy to secret information the rear of the world doesn’t know therefor making those believers think they are special. There is a while industry devotes to making money off of these pseudoscientific theories and religious beliefs. Some of those making money off this stuff know it’s false while others are true believers.

The only way to combat these beliefs is with simple logic. Take a step back and simplify these beliefs. Pointing out how people choose to make connections where there are none may help. Opposing opinions do not sway these believers. Only fact and logic can challenge these ridiculous theories. I could go into specific examples of how this can be done but I am feeling lazy today. If after confronting these people with logic they refuse to even consider your ideas then whomever you are talking to is beyond saving. These people have something missing in their lives and often are looking to blame something or someone outside of themeselces for their lot in life. Like I said before these ideas are tempting and appeal to something within us that make us want to believe. Most of the time those preaching the gospel of the absurd are very charismatic. This combined with the tempting ideas themselves can sucker us into believing in fantasies.

No one really knows the answers to the big questions. Don’t trust anyone who says they know. Question everything and use simple logic to make sure everything makes sense. Always research both sides of any theory or religious belief before accepting a position. Don’t be a sucker.

Militant Atheism

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Father Jonathan Morris is first and foremost a blathering idiot. He drools as he speaks and shits his pants while trying to make sure the world still makes sense as he listens to the voices from outside his own head. Father Jonny,( do you think he’ll mind if I call him Jonny?), is secondly a FOX News contributor. Father Jonny ended up writing a nice little article over at the FOX news blog about activist atheists rewriting history. Now I hear lots of stories on FOX that aim to promote religious views and I’ve about had it up to here (I’m pointing to my forehead). Forget what father Jon Doe said for a minute and lets (or let me) talk about why FOX promotes the religious values and why. FOX, like the right in general, want you to think in binary terms. Good or bad. Heaven or Hell. When FOX airs a story on religion it is most often not serving the purpose of building up religion but of tearing down those who aren’t religious. Worse yet, the non religious people are always liberals. But they aren’t promoting themselves as liberals- just agnostics or atheists. If you notice, the FUCKED News network will always throw in a line about them being liberal. FOX news is telling you that you are bad if you aren’t religious. And if you aren’t religious then you are a liberal. Liberal=Bad, Bad=No religion.

I’m a little dosjointed in my thinking right now but let me broaden my subject now. Hell, I’m just gonna come right out and say what I first thought when I saw Father Buttfucker’s story. Religion is a pile of shit to be flushed down the toilet of society. If you believe, fine, I won’t take that away from you. But lets stop forcing it on people. Why don’t the atheists let the nativity scenes go up. They don’t harm anyone. And I don’t mind if someone says Merry Christmas to me. I draw the line at Intelligent Design. The idea thats basically Creationism dressed up in science clothes. No way, we’re not that stupid. Take your I.D. and go design yourselves another planet to live on. Friggin dopes.

Religion is a bunch of myths. Did you know that almost every religion ever since the dawn of man had a savior born on December 25th who was born of a virgin mother and a bunch of other “coincidences” that I can’t remember.

I don’t know. This wasn’t a well thought out blog. Its just that I haven’t posted anything relevant or interesting in a while and I’ve been losing traffic to the site. Not that I get anything from web traffic, its just that I like to feel popular.

The Smelly Carcass of (all) Religion(s)

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Why do I call it a carcass? Because I think its dead. I think that religion is beginning to be replaced by spirituality. What’s the difference? Well religion is more like a club that you get initiated into. Some ancient dudes took spirituality from the people, organized it into a set of rules and rituals, then put themselves in charge and passed down its leadership from generation to generation. If you wanted to have power over people you wouldn’t become a politician. You would become a priest. So you join the club, get initiated, then you meet every Sunday and sometimes on special days that aren’t Sunday but are even more special than Sunday. You do everything as a group. You listen to what the man performing the weekly ritual tells you. Sometimes he tells you what to think. He might say “Abortion is wrong because thats how I interpreted such and such line from my 2000 year old book written by people looking to serve their own agenda just as I am today”. Well, maybe he’s not that blunt about it but you know Thats what he means.

Now spirituality is not something created by man. Its harder to grasp. Its different for everyone but the same in that everyone can be in touch with their own spirituality if they wanted and if you have a conscience or instincs (I hope to hell you have both or your a poorly put together person) then you can be spiritual. Spirituality is about acknowledging imperfection and seeing the beauty in it. Its about understanding that there is something out there greater than ourselves. A spiritual person does the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing, not because he or she is afraid of going to hell. Spiritual people don’t have an infantile image of god as a man or being of any kind really, that is on a cloud watching what we do. To the spiritual person God is a force like a wind that blows down a tree or the electricity running my computer. Spiritual people acknowledge and more often are more aware that they and every other person ARE God. Now I won’t explain that last statement that everyone is God because its a perfect example of the difference between religion and spirituality. Those who are spiritual will understand what I mean and those who are deeply religious will believe that I am arrogant and actually believe that I have godlike powers.

I’ve always had a distaste for religion. I’ve always felt it was disingenuous. My father always told me that its always the ones who are in church every week giving the most to the collection plate and playing the role of the perfect christian that are the biggest hypocrites of all. And I saw exactly what he was talking about when something was revealed about one of those people he was talking about. What she did was not a very christian thing to do. I know its bad for the argument not to explain what happened but I don’t care I just don’t want to say what happened.

Religion is dangerous. It teaches people to simplify life into black and white terms. Its been 2000 years since Jesus. His teachings are timeless but to dig into specific details of the bible and say that what you read is proof positive that something is wrong or right is ludicrous. We’ve grown so much as humans since then and some of us are trying to hold us back with their ancient book and their newfound 2000 year old mindset. I hope some of these people move on over to the side of spirituality. For the spiritual person there is room for faith AND knowledge. You can believe in God and you don’t have to reconcile science and your faith with ridiculous pseudo-science like creationism.

You CAN keep your faith and you don’t have to believe that dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago. I mean c’mon. Some of the things these people say are… well there’s just no word for how retarded it is.
