Happy New Year from Bill

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Hello everyone. I want to wish everyone a happy new year.

I started this blog a few months ago because I had a lot to say. I had previously been using MySpace but found it to be too impersonal and not far reaching enough. There were people requesting to be my friend who may have never even glanced at my profile. I outgrew that outfit preferring rather to post social commentary and talk about topics that people could relate to or were interested - not about what outfit I’m wearing today or if I are breakfast or not.

Through this blog I’ve met many like-minded and interesting people and new visitors are showing up like gangbusters every day. When I started this blog I never thought I’d reach over 200 visitors total much less 200 visitors per day!

I especially want to wish those of you who I met through this blog a happy new year as well. People like Terra and Pete and the many other visitors who happen to run blogs that I visit daily.

Its a new year and that means new beginnings. As everyone knows I’ve been working tirelessly on a new web site that extends this blog. The new site will be an extension of this blog in that not only will it have the same blog you know and love but also more pages that make it an extension of my personality on the web. Some things you will see is:

  • Of course the original blog on the same topics as always
  • A feed. This will be random musings like a Tumblelog. It will contain stuff I find online, music, videos, quotes, and anything that doesn’t fit in the original blog.
  • A section about me. A short bio with links to all the social networks I’m on so you can follow me.
  • Felix and Friends. My original music will be online. You can download songs, view lyrics and photos, and find out when and where I’ll be performing next.
  • Extras. From time to time I’ll provide a download of some sort. Maybe a program I wrote or a wallpaper for your computer or a set of icons. Who knows?

Things to come in the future

I’m only one person so I could only fit a certain number of things into the site at once. What you will see are the essentials. In the future I may add:

  • Coding tutorials.
  • Wordpress themes
  • Who knows? Ideas are welcome!

You can visit the new site at http://version2point1.tk

The site isn’t finished quite yet. I still have to work on the design. But the site itself works. I can hardly wait to show it off so I will. Since the site works but doesn’t look pretty, I want to invite everyone to visit the one part of the site that is ready for primetime. Of course the design of this part of the site will be changed to match the rest of the site when its finished but you can check it out right now.

Come follow the development of version2point1 with the version2point1 feed.

So I’m using this awesome program called JDarkRoom. Its basically a free version of WriteRoom. What is does is give you an entire blank screen to write with. Nothing but text. Really. Nothing but text. It looks just like MS-DOS but you can control the colors. So right now I have a blank light blue screen and white text. It really inspires you to write.

Since I’m writing let me give you an update of things to come.

First off, I’m going to write a book. And I’m going to publish it in serial form on this blog. Again this is inspired by JDarkRoom. Its going to be about my adventures over the past couple of years. Maybe starting around late 2005 or early 2006. I had a very terrible thing happen to me. If you know me then you know what it is and you might be interested to read about it. If you don’t know what it is then let me assure you its not some boring story about my every day life. I wouldn’t bore anyone with that. Its going to be something people can learn from. What I’d like people to take away from it is a message parents can tell their children. Something that will inform parents on a serious subject. It will be informative to anyone who reads it. It will also be entertaining. A lot of drama.

I am almost done with a new song for this Wednesday’s open mic night. I have three songs in the works. The one that I call “Ball: Without a chain” is the one I am planning to have ready on Wednesday. The other one will be ready the week after that and I have one more than I’m kind of stuck with. Its very pop and the few lyrics it already has reminds me of… well something really poppy. Not bad pop, but not good pop either. The kind of pop thats on top 40 radio but doesn’t get made fun of by hard core music fans. As it stands its a song that I can’t logically fit into my catalog. But at least I have my other two. I like to play one song from the previous week and one new one each time. That way I know that if I screw up the newer one or if people don’t like it the older one can slavage the performance. But I always play older songs first then newer ones. I get the audience hooked on something familiar and then I’m able to experiment without losing them. I think I read into the open mic audience too much. I’m sure they could care less. I’ve worked on my singing and it should be up to par with my playing.
I’m really hoping Joe offers to let me play a show when he gets the opportunity. I don’t have his kind of connections so its kind of hard.

This site will be moving to its own server. I don’t have the money right now but when I do I’m going to launch “to the Left of Bill 2.0″. Its gonna be a serious upgrade. Its basically going to be run by a web application that I’m creating right now. Of course it will have the blog which will consist of everything that I have here and some other cool applications. I’m going to have a members only section (it will be free of course) to access certain content, a music player like they have on myspace and other cool content. I’m not going to change the focus of the site, its just going to have extra stuff. So if you like the site the way it is don’t worry, I will most likely be running Wordpress as my blog application and CodeIgniter as my CMS. If anyone has any suggestions for what sort of content to have on the site please comment or email me or get a hold of me any way you can. I need all the ideas I can get. The more features the better. Also if anyone wants to be really cool and be my best friend forever they might let me use their server for free. I don’t know what I could do for you but I’m sure we can work something out.

I mentioned CodeIgniter earlier. I am going to try using that framework instead of CakePHP. So far its better documented and they have way more resources to learn from. The weird thing is they’re newer than Cake.

I don’t have a lot to write about. I kind of have blogger’s block. I tried to write in my Moleskine and I ended up wasting a whole page just to write the date. Lame. But I also haven’t slept in a few days. I’ve been staying up all night downloading and testing out programs and organizing my stuff. Now that I have my shit together I can start working again.

Tomorrow I’ll have a good post for you. None of this what am I up to bullshit. You’ll get opinions so sharp and biting that you’ll bleed after reading them. Maybe I’ll review code igniter. I know I’ve writing a lot of technical stuff lately but I enjoy programming and there’s an audience for it.
