What do you want for Christmas?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

I feel obliged to write about Christmas today. It is after all Christmas Eve and everyone’s thoughts have turned away from politics, current events, entertainment, music (which is really a part of entertainment), and I’m sure no one except me is thinking about programming. All thoughts are turning instead to Christmas type things - presents, religious traditions, family and friends, how your lights outside keep on going out, etc.

I have two questions for everyone. Leave a comment and let me know:
What are you thankful for this Christmas and what do you want for Christmas?

I have a lot to be thankful for this Christmas. This will be my first sober Christmas in about three years. I recently was lucky to acquire the strength to ask for help in my addiction to heroin. I lost everything to that addiction. My job, money, family, respect, health, and independence all went to hell. I did gain a few things from it though - debt, a felony charge, and a pretty ankle bracelet that alerts the court if I drink. But I can’t complain. I found myself in sobriety and my life is better than it ever was. I believe that to truly be happy you must have the experience of hitting bottom. I am thankful for my sobriety. I am thankful for the fact that my family supports me again.

There are a few things I’d like for Christmas. I’d like to go back to school to study programming. I’d like to get some web space to host my new site. I want more opportunities to perform my music. I love open mic on Wednesdays but I’d like to go back out and perform for paying crowds like I did back three or four years ago before the drugs really took hold. Maybe some recording equipment would be nice as I sold the nice equipment I used to have. A job would be ideal. Especially working for CakePHP. Thats pretty much all I want.

What are you thankful for this Christmas?
and…
What do you want for Christmas?

Let me know.

Merry Christmas,

-Bill
